TRANSIT by Soen portable Bluetooth speaker comes to India at Rs. 12,990

| comments

TRANSIT by Soen, a California-based company that specialises in high-end audio equipment, is a compact, premium Bluetooth speaker set that sports 1.3" x 6.6" x 3.8" dimensions and weighs around half a kilogram. The speaker is powered by a rechargeable battery that gives around 8 hours of playback time on a single charge. It also comes with a built-in mic, which means you can pair TRANSIT with your phone for hands-free calling.

We had a chance to spend some time with the speaker and our overall impression was extremely positive. TRANSIT exudes quality from first glance at the packaging of the product, to the time you hold the speaker in your hand, and of course when you start listening to music.

Transit by Soen..................

The build quality is excellent and the speaker comes with a magnetic cover that snaps on to offer protection from dust and accidental damage when not in use. The speaker can lie flat on its back or you can push a button to bring out the kickstand, which makes it ideal for placing on, say, a bedside table. The retail pack comes with a USB charger, a Micro-USB cable, documentation, as well as a 3.5mm audio cable (for the aux-in port).

TRANSIT by Soen has a flip power button on the side, with the pairing button sandwiched between the volume up and down buttons at the top. The Micro-USB and aux-in ports are at the side as well. Getting started by pairing the speaker with our smartphone was simple enough, like most Bluetooth speakers.

As far as the audio quality is concerned, we were impressed by the clarity of sound, which did not distort even at maximum volume. However, we found ourselves wishing that the speaker could go a notch louder. The bass performance was impressive for a speaker this size; probably the best we've come across in a compact Bluetooth speaker.

As stated earlier, the company claims 8 hours of audio playback on a single charge, but we did not get a chance to test this claim in the limited time we had with our unit.

Sony launches its gaming console PlayStation at Rs 39,990 in India it will be available from 6th January

| comments

Soon after Sony launched its new gaming console the PlayStation 4 in India, people started its comparison with Microsoft’s Microsoft Corp.’s new Xbox One. PlayStation 4 is priced at Rs 39,990 in India and will hit the stores starting from January 6, 2014.

The Sony PS4 is powered by an integrated CPU-GPU design, featuring a 8-core low power x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" CPU, coupled with a 1.84 TFLOPS AMD Radeon GPU. It also features a secondary processor that does the network processing tasks in standby mode, in order to optimise power consumption.

The PS4 comes with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM for memory with a 500GB hard disk drive. It also has a Blu-ray disc and DVD drive. It has 2 USB 3.0 ports, one AUX port, an Ethernet port, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR), an HDMI out port, and an optical-out port as connectivity options.

It is interesting to note that both Microsoft and Sony have opted for an x86-based CPU-GPU SoC architecture for their consoles, powered by AMD.

The launch lineup includes 22 games to attract fans of just about any genre, from military shooters to sports simulations to family-friendly adventures including "Killzone: Shadow Fall," and "Drive Club." It also comes with media apps, including Hulu and Netflix.

Sony claimed in November that it had sold 1 million units of its new PlayStation 4 gaming console in the first 24 hours after it hit the market on November 15. The consoles was launched in the U.S. and Canada. It sold more than 2.1 million units after less than three weeks since its launch in North America.

Andrew House, president and group CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment Inc at the time of global launch had said that sales remained strong in North America.

Sony Corp had previously announced it had received more than 1 million advance orders for the console. Still, the initial sales figures are Sony's first salvo in a battle brewing with Microsoft Corp's Xbox One console, which went for sale Nov 22. Sony is also hoping its console can help build a platform for recovery at the Japanese company's money-losing consumer electronics operations.

Sony is planning to sell 5 million PS4 units by the end of its fiscal year that ends onMarch 31. Robert W. Baird & Co analyst Colin Sebastian has said he expects 2.5 million to 3 million PS4 shipments in the fourth quarter in North America.

The PlayStation 4 is Sony’s first new video game console in seven years. It faces competition from Microsoft Corp.’s new Xbox One which has a holistic approach could be called a complete entertainment system. The console incorporates live television as if it is some kind of a magic wand. When the Xbox One is connected to the television, it simply acts like a robot and integrates the live feed.

If we go into more details the large sized Xbox One provides  air more room to circulate, which is likely to ensure the console does not overheat even when under strain for prolonged periods. then it has It has a better launch line-up.

Xbox One has serious potential that you don’t get with the PS4 camera.

Logitech Launced New Z600 speakers with Sweet Sound and Elegant looks

| comments

Bluetooth speakers now come in different shapes and sizes. Cylindrical, drum or tube-shaped or even saucer like, we have seen them in various appearances. The Z600 Bluetooth speakers from Logitech are a work of fine art; with gentle curves, a fabric finish and pleasant colours, the Z600 perfectly complement the good looks of your Apple Macintosh or the present-day, thin and good-looking notebook computers from numerous vendors. When placed next to the computer, the Z600 look like beautiful flower vases with gray fabric grilles. On or off, they add a graceful note to any space.

Out of the box, the silver coloured Z600 are pretty light and look more like computer speakers but Logitech wants us to use them more as wireless speakers, hence the Bluetooth capability. There is a white strip that runs up the length of the satellite from the audio cable connection.

On the right speaker, the white strip holds the Bluetooth and power buttons and, behind a rubber door, an 3.5 mm auxiliary input. Other than that, the top of the control speaker holds a touch disc and Bluetooth status light, micro-USB port and AUX jack.

Set up was a simple affair at my end. While the speakers are wireless, they still have cords. You connect the speaker wires to the Y-connector and plug the power supply into an outlet. On the control speaker, you will need to press the power button and a tone tells you that the speakers are powered and ready for use. When pairing a Bluetooth device, such as a notebook computer or a mobile phone, you need to press the Bluetooth button. The status light will blink rapidly to indicate that the speakers are ready for pairing.

Often, Bluetooth connections can be a little troublesome with computers. That is why Logitech has included the USB transmitter so the speakers will quickly and easily pair up with your computer and stream audio more reliably. The transmitter also allows for smooth switching between connected devices.

iPad Air Specification and Review It is faster and lighter, but too much thinner

| comments

Holding the iPad Air for the first time I was quite sure that this was lighter than my old tablet. There was no doubt about that. In fact, at 469 grams, it has become almost 150 grams lighter in comparison to my iPad 2 and shed almost 200 grams when compared to the fourth generation. That is quite substantial.

But has it become thinner? I couldn't quite make out at in a single glance. On paper the iPad 2 is 9mm thick and the iPad Air is thinner at 7.5mm. But it is hard to make out the difference, though 1.5mm has been shaved off in comparison to the last three versions of the tablet. Keep the two devices side by side and it is almost impossibe to find a difference in height, at least to the naked eye.

Take Your Cable Channels Everywhere You Go With NimbleTV

| comments

Pay TV is the easiest way to watch the shows you like. You sit down, grab the remote, and you’re instantly transported to the land of reality TV and sports. But once you leave the house, there’s no uniform way to watch your shows without additional hardware. NimbleTV wants to fix that.

NimbleTV’s TV everywhere service launches today in the New York metropolitan area. It streams the pay TV channels you subscribe to directly to your iPhone, computer browser, Roku, Apple TV, or other smart TVs. In addition to streaming live TV, its cloud-based DVR feature means you can record a show to watch later while on the road.

At launch the service will only work in New York and requires an authenticated cable subscription for the add-on subscription. It starts at $3.99, and includes up to 24 channels. You’ll have to check with NimbleTV about which channels you’ll receive for your pay TV subscription. The service currently supports Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Verizon FIOS, and RCN.

If you’re not a cable subscriber, NimbleTV has a concierge service that signs you up for a cable subscription and the service. That starts at $30 a month. Both types of accounts require an authenticated address within a supported pay-TV service’s New York area. In other words, you can’t sign up for New York TV if you live in St. Louis.

NimbleTV is quick to point out that it’s not affiliated with any cable or satellite provider. It also told WIRED in 2012 that it didn’t foresee any legal issues with the service. “SlingBox has been around for 10 years and people placeshift all the time,” said CEO Anand Subramanian. “This is very similar.”
Legal issues aside, if you live in New York and you vacation in France, Japan, or even St. Louis, taking your cable TV with you via a Roku or Apple TV is pretty compelling.

Facebook is working on a Sympathise button

| comments

Facebook is developing a 'sympathise' button as an alternative to the 'like' button.
If a user tags their status with a negative emotion, then his or her friends will be able to 'sympathise' with the post rather than press the 'like' button.
Until now the ‘like’ button has proved to be unsuitable for use on gloomy occasions such as the death of a pet.

Bad news such as the changing of a relationship status from ‘married’ to ‘divorced’ has also stretched the limits of the feature.

The ‘sympathise’ button emerged at a Facebook ‘hackathon’ event, where the company's engineers come together and brainstorm new ideas.
Many of the site’s most popular features such as the Timeline and even the ‘like’ button have emerged from past such events.
According to Dan Muriello, a software engineer at Facebook, the feature will not work for every post.
However, he said if a user tags a status with certain emotions the result would be "five people sympathise with this," instead of "five people ‘like’ this".
He said: "Which of course a lot of people were – and still are – very excited about.
"But we made a decision that it was not exactly the right time to launch that product. Yet."
Mr Muriello did not give a timeline for when the ‘sympathise’ button might be rolled out.
Facebook has long ruled out the idea of a ‘dislike’ button despite online campaigns by thousands of users on the grounds that it is too negative.
A Facebook spokesman said that hackathons are ‘the foundation for great innovation and thinking about how we can better serve people around the world’.
He added: "Some of our best ideas come from hackathons, and the many ideas that don’t get pursued often help us think differently about how we can improve our service".
Facebook is the largest social network in the world with 1.19 billion users worldwide, of which 24 million are in the UK, or almost half the population

The two packs have been priced at Rs 15 and Rs 30. "These data packs will enable Tata Docomo prepay GSM customers to enjoy the hugely popular WhatsApp with specially customised value for money data plans and with unlimited use," the company said in a statement.

The company said it conducted an independent research and came to know that users need customised data offerings and want to pay only for the applications that they consume.

"Standing tall on the fundamental tenet of simplifying consumer's life, dedicated WhatsApp data packs serves up a hassle-free experience for our consumers with a clear focus on enriching the data experience," Tata Docomo Head VAS Marketing Rishimohan Malhotra said.

"This partnership allows us to tap into Tata's market presence in India and continue WhatsApp's significant growth as the global leader in the mobile communication space," WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton said.

Check New 8 Core Processor Which Will Speed Up Your Mobile

| comments

Intex, an Indian phone company will soon start selling a smartphone powered by an 8-core processor. This new processor is made by MediaTek, a Taiwanese company. Unlike the 8-core processor made by Samsung, which uses only four cores at a time in Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4, the processor made by MediaTek can use all of its cores simultaneously.

The processor is called MT6592 and it can run at a speed of up to 2GHz. But in the phone that Intex will launch, the processor will run at the speed of up to 1.7GHz.

For now Intex is the only Indian company that has announced its intention to launch a phone powered by this 8-core processor but if past is any indication, MT6592 should soon come in other phones sold by local companies like Micromax and Spice. Currently most of the top-end phones sold by local players are powered by MT 6589, a quad-core processor made by MediaTek.

There are two key questions:

* How fast is an 8-core processor? Can it match or beat the high-end quad-core processors used by Samsung and Qualcomm?

* Does it help consumers get better experience from the phone? Do you need 8-cores in a processor?

Before we talk about MT6592, let's take a look at its specifications:
* MT6592 has 8 cores based on A7 architecture by ARM. A7 is a low-performance, low-power use architecture compared to technology used by Qualcomm and Samsung in their high-end processors.

* The processor has four cores of Mali 450 graphics chip

* MT6592 supports playback of 4K videos

* It supports new video codecs such as H.265 and VP9

* The chip supports up to 16 mega-pixel cameras

To check theoretical performance of MT6592, we ran some benchmarking apps on the Intex phone that will launch in January. The device is in prototype stage as the software running on it is not yet final. So performance figures we obtained through benchmarks are only indicative of the final performance, which is likely to be slightly better.

We used GeekBench 3, Vellamo HTML and Vellamo Metal, BrowserMark and Sunspider to find out the general computing performance.

To get an indication of gaming performance of MT6592, 3D Mark, GLBenchmark 2.7 and BaseMark X were run on the phone.

Results Geekbench 3: 440 points for single core. 2331 points for multi-core.

Interpretation: MT6592 offers lots of performance to apps that can use all its cores. Unfortunately most apps use one or two cores and performance with these apps is likely to be average with MT6592.

Vellamo HTML: 1834 points

Vellamo Metal: 681 points

Interpretation: This is a decent score but nowhere near what top phones manage. But this is enough performance for a fast and responsive phone.

BrowserMark: 2515 points

Sunspider: 997 points (lower is better)

Interpretation: This is a good score and shows that MT6592 is capable of offering good web browsing experience.
3D Mark: 7095 points is the total score. For physics, MT6589 scores 11034 points and for graphics the score is 6438 points.

Interpretation: Compared to budget Android phones, which are powered by quad-core processors, and are currently available, this is a good score. Compared to the high-end Android phones, it is a disappointing score. The key here is that physics score, which is based on general processor, is very good but the graphics score based on graphics chip is poor.

BaseMark X: 5.39 frames per second (offscreen)

GLBenchmark 2.7: 11FPS in GLB 2.7 and 30FPS in GLB 2.5. Both offscreen

Interpretation: MT6592 is likely to have decent gaming performance. This means it will run games like Temple Run very well. But it is likely to have problem handling games that have very high-quality graphics like Dead Trigger 2.

Comparison To see how MT6592 compares to a high-end processor like Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, we ran the same benchmarks on Nexus 5. Here are the scores:

Geekbench 3: 943 points for single core. 2647 points for multi-core.

Vellamo HTML: 1582 points (this score seems too low in Nexus 5. Usually Snapdragon 800 chip scores around 2900 points)

Vellamo Metal: 1168 points

BrowserMark: 3073 points

Sunspider: 669 points (lower is better)

3D Mark: 17463 points is the total score. For physics, the device scores 15924 points and for graphics the score is 17959 points.

BaseMark X: 14 frames per second (offscreen)

GLBenchmark 2.7: 23FPS in GLB 2.7 and 58FPS in GLB 2.5. Both offscreen.

Are eight cores better?
The answer is a clear no. Number of cores doesn't matter. The actual technology used inside the cores is more important. This is the reason why Snapdragon 800 is significantly faster than MT6589 even though it has four less cores. Similarly the chip in Note 3 is also faster than MT6592. And theoretically, A7, the processor that powers iPhone 5S is faster than every other mobile processor even though it has just two cores.

Another important bit here is that even though theoretically the general performance of MT6592 seems very good, the graphics performance is poor compared to what high-end phones offer.

Will this 8-core processor make your phone faster?
The good thing about MT6592 is that it will power budget and mainstream phones. The idea here is to offer almost 70% to 80% performance that high-end phones have at a price that is around 50% less.

In that respect, MT6592 seems to serve its purpose well.

Theoretically the new MediaTek processor is significantly faster than MT6589, a quad-core processor that powers almost all the current top-end smartphones sold by Indian companies. It is also faster than the processors used by companies like Samsung and LG in their mainstream and budget Android phones.

Performance is definitively there in the MT6592. But as a consumer, be careful of the hype. Eight cores in a phone don't magically make it better than devices like Nexus 5.

There are good cores, average cores and bad cores. If you want good cores, especially if you want top class gaming experience, you will still have to spend a bit more. Thankfully, if companies use MT6592 properly and optimize the software on their phones well, it seems to have enough power to provide smooth Android experience to people who use budget and mainstream phones.
